The Emergency Medicine Medical Education Fellowship at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine is designed to train the next generation of clinician-educators and leaders in academic emergency medicine, with a focus on medical education, educational scholarship, learning theory–informed curriculum development and implementation, mentorship, and academic leadership.

Our fellowship prepares physicians for careers in academic emergency medicine through immersive, longitudinal experiences across undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education. Fellows will develop expertise in teaching, program development, educational innovation, and scholarly dissemination while working closely with experienced faculty mentors in a collaborative academic environment. Fellows will also be concurrently enrolled in a Master of Health Professions Education (MHPE) program through a collaboration between Maastricht University and New York University.

Fellowship Overview

Fellows engage in a comprehensive curriculum that includes the following:

• formal medical education didactics
• longitudinal bedside and classroom teaching
• curriculum development and educational innovation
• mentored education scholarship and research
• simulation-based education experiences
• assessment and feedback training
• program evaluation and quality improvement in education
• leadership and administrative experiences in medical education
• participation in departmental, residency, and medical school educational initiatives

Fellows will emerge with advanced skills in teaching, curriculum design, mentorship, education scholarship, and academic leadership, supported by close mentorship from faculty with expertise in medical education and clinician-educator development.
 
To be eligible, applicants must have graduated from or be currently enrolled in an emergency medicine residency program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Clinical Training

Fellows will maintain active clinical practice primarily at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island, with additional clinical opportunities at affiliated sites in Suffolk County.

Clinical environments offer:

• high-acuity emergency medicine practice
• diverse patient populations
• opportunities for bedside teaching and clinical supervision
• resident and medical student education within the clinical environment
• opportunities to develop faculty and advanced practice provider (APP) educational programming

Fellows will maintain clinical responsibilities throughout training while developing expertise as clinician-educators and academic leaders.

Education and Teaching

Fellows play an active role across the educational continuum, with opportunities that include:

• teaching medical students in undergraduate medical education courses and clerkships
• participating in emergency medicine residency didactics and bedside teaching
• leading simulation-based educational sessions
• developing curricula and educational materials
• mentoring residents and medical students
• engaging in continuing medical education activities
• participating in program administration at the UME and GME levels

Fellows will also help facilitate the department’s academic mission by contributing to educational programming, supporting scholarly initiatives, and serving as educational resources for faculty, residents, and students.

Advanced Training in Medical Education

Fellows will have the opportunity to pursue a departmentally funded Master of Health Professions Education (MHPE) through internationally acclaimed Maastricht University, delivered in partnership with New York University’s US-based campus. 

The MHPE curriculum provides formal training in:

• learning theory
• curriculum design
• assessment and evaluation
• qualitative and quantitative research methods
• leadership in medical education
• educational scholarship 

Research and Scholarship

Scholarship is a central focus of the fellowship, with robust mentorship and institutional support for educational research and scholarly dissemination. Fellows are expected to complete scholarly projects with mentorship and support from departmental faculty and institutional collaborators.

Fellows will receive support for:

• project design and Institutional Review Board (IRB) development
• data collection and analysis
• abstract submission and conference presentation
• manuscript preparation and peer-reviewed publication

Fellows are encouraged to present scholarly work at regional and national meetings, including organizations focused on emergency medicine and medical education.

Leadership and Administration

Fellows participate in educational leadership and administrative experiences within the Department of Emergency Medicine and NYU Grossman Long Island, contributing to:

• residency and medical school curriculum development
• program evaluation and educational quality improvement
• educational committee participation
• faculty development initiatives
• mentorship and learner support programs
• departmental academic programming

There are also opportunities to engage in educational leadership, strategic planning, and academic program development.

Program Details

The Emergency Medicine Medical Education Fellowship is a two-year program beginning July 1, 2027.

Fellows receive:

• protected time for medical education and scholarship activities
• longitudinal mentorship from clinician-educator faculty
• an academic appointment at NYU Grossman Long Island for the duration of training
• support for conference attendance and scholarly dissemination
• a competitive salary and full-time benefits

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

• be graduates of, or currently enrolled in, an ACGME-accredited emergency medicine residency program
• be board-eligible or board-certified in emergency medicine and licensed to practice medicine in New York State at the time of fellowship matriculation
• be in good standing within their current residency or professional program
