Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery

We are dedicated to cardiothoracic surgical training, research, and clinical care.

The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine is committed to providing outstanding medical education, research opportunities, and clinical care of patients with conditions such as coronary artery disease, heart valve disease, congestive heart failure, and thoracic malignancies.

The breadth of our expertise is illustrated through our highly trained faculty who are actively engaged in the academic process and who offer the most advanced surgical therapies to patients with cardiac and thoracic conditions.

Our specialists are skilled in performing and training medical students and residents in standard open cardiothoracic surgery and minimally invasive approaches such as endovascular and transcatheter treatments, thoracoscopic procedures, mini-incision surgery, and robotic-assisted surgery. Some of the many procedures we routinely perform are coronary artery bypass, catheter-based heart valve replacement and repair—including transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and MitraClip surgery—thoracic aortic aneurysm repair, and thoracic tumor resection.

Our doctors collaborate with clinicians in the Division of Cardiology, a part of the Department of Medicine at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine, to offer treatment at our Heart Failure Advanced Care Center. Together, we perform cardiopulmonary mechanical assist procedures, including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and ventricular assist device support. We also work closely with the NYU Langone Transplant Institute to care for patients who need heart and lung transplants.

Cardiothoracic Surgery Education

Our department trains the next generation of cardiothoracic surgeons through a balance of teaching and clinical activities.

Medical students and trainees in the General Surgery Residency at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine rotate on the cardiothoracic service to gain exposure to the operating room and the variety of procedures our cardiothoracic surgeons perform at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island. We also collaborate with physicians in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine, a part of the Department of Medicine at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine, so our medical students and general surgery residents learn about critical care in the cardiothoracic intensive care unit.

Our students and residents also interact with cardiothoracic surgeons and pulmonary and critical care specialists at NYU Grossman School of Medicine through conferences and other collaborative educational opportunities.

Additionally, our department offers continuing medical education courses for healthcare professionals who wish to further their training.

Cardiothoracic Surgery Research

We conduct clinical trials on medical devices for the treatment of valvular disease and encourage postgraduate students to become involved in this research. Learn more about research at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine.
