Community Initiatives
At NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine, our students’ time in medical school isn’t defined only by clinical training. Alongside our dedicated faculty, residents, and fellows, MD students actively participate in clubs and activities and other experiences that focus on engaging with the community we strive to serve. Public service is a vital part of your education here, and together we uphold this commitment, offering numerous opportunities for everyone to get involved and make a meaningful impact.
WiSH Clinic
Through the Wellness Initiative Student-Run Health (WiSH) Clinic, our students provide free, high-quality primary care, health screenings, and essential services to uninsured and underinsured patients on Long Island. Students treat patients at the clinic in conjunction with attending physicians from the Department of Family Medicine and also run the clinic’s daily operations, scheduling visits, checking in patients, managing the free pharmacy, and supporting fundraising efforts. Students have a chance to participate in every aspect of healthcare delivery and service learning, while also providing a valuable community service.
In its new home in a 4,283-square-foot facility at 175 Fulton Street in Hempstead, the clinic operates as a partnership between NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island and RotaCare, a free volunteer-based health clinic. For more information about the WiSH Clinic, contact Aparna Raghu at Aparna.Raghu@NYULangone.org or Maria Bower at Maria.Bower@NYULangone.org.

NYU Langone’s Community Service Plan serves as our strategic blueprint for outreach and community initiatives. We leverage this plan to intensify our community engagement and support. The plan also offers insights for anyone seeking to understand the needs of our local communites, serving as a foundation for informed collaboration and impactful change. Through the partnerships outlined in our Community Service Plan, we have been focused on preventing chronic diseases and encouraging health behavior changes via evidence-based strategies at the neighborhood level in Hempstead, Long Island.
