The Division of Oncology and Hematology, in the Department of Medicine at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine, is an integral part of Perlmutter Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute–designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. Our faculty of subspecialized medical oncologists and hematologists manage a full range of cancers, benign tumors, and blood disorders with the latest evidence-based, patient-centered approaches to care.

Under the leadership of Jeffrey G. Schneider, MD, division chief, we conduct basic, translational, and clinical research to advance treatment. Our division has brought several innovative therapies to patients through a robust clinical trials program. We also offer educational training to medical students, residents, and fellows to prepare tomorrow’s physicians in the latest approaches to cancer care.

Oncology and Hematology Education

Our academic program includes disease-specific, multidisciplinary tumor boards; didactic case conferences; grand rounds; and bedside teaching in a close-knit environment. We also offer continuing medical education opportunities to healthcare providers in the fields of oncology and hematology throughout the region who wish to further their training.

Medical Student Education

As part of the MD curriculum, our faculty teach a two-week preclerkship in hematology and oncology in the first year of medical student education that includes laboratory sessions, interactions with patients, and teaching at the bedside. We are also receptive to mentoring medical students in individualized research projects.

Residency Training

Trainees in the Internal Medicine Residency can participate in inpatient and outpatient elective rotations led by our oncology and hematology faculty.

Fellowship Training

We offer a three-year, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education–accredited Oncology and Hematology Fellowship that satisfies double board eligibility and trains physicians in the prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment of various malignancies and blood disorders. In addition to comprehensive clinical training, the fellowship offers protected research time with a faculty mentor and serves as an excellent introduction to future research in the discipline of oncology and hematology.

Oncology and Hematology Research

Our division is a site for numerous investigational drug and treatment trials for cancers, benign tumors, and blood disorders. Some of our current areas of research include interactions between immunotherapy and the tumor microenvironment; the importance of the microbiome in mediating the immunotherapeutic response; interactions between driver mutations and other coexisting mutations; new combinational strategies in the treatment of multiple myeloma; the importance of nutrition in cancer outcomes; barriers to lung cancer screening; epidemiology of colon cancer; the impact of exercise on breast cancer outcomes; and tumor marker validation in various malignancies.

Our physician–scientists regularly present at annual meetings of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), American Society of Hematology (ASH), San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS), and World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC). Oncology and Hematology Clinical Services

Specialists in the Division of Oncology and Hematology provide care for inpatients and outpatients at Perlmutter Cancer Center at NYU Langone Long Island Hematology and Oncology. Our clinical services include a dedicated inpatient oncology unit, multiple outpatient chemotherapy and biotherapy infusion centers, a growing bone marrow and stem cell transplant program, a dedicated blood bank, and a strong palliative care program.

Our oncologists and hematologists collaborate with experts in pathology, radiology, surgical oncology, radiology oncology, and genetics counseling to create personalized treatment plans. Social workers, dietitians, and disease- and tumor site–specific nurse navigators are also valuable members of our care team.

Our treatment plans feature advanced, evidence-based modalities, including immunotherapy, monoclonal antibody–based therapy, and stem cell transplants. Highly targeted radiation therapy is available through Perlmutter Cancer Center at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island CyberKnife Center.

Our specialists also offer lung cancer screening, advanced breast cancer detection, and advanced gastrointestinal and pulmonary endoscopic procedures at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island.
