Division of Internal Medicine | NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine | NYU Langone Health

Division of Internal Medicine

Our division educates future leaders in internal medicine and offers exceptional patient care.

Established as a separate academic entity in the Department of Medicine in 1980, the Department of Internal Medicine at NYU Langone Hospital-Long Island as a part of NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine, provides exceptional care to our diverse patient population in both the inpatient and outpatient setting, while consistently developing superior clinicians and academicians in internal medicine and its subspecialties.

Internal Medicine Education

As the largest division, our providers play an essential role in multiple educational programs for medical students and internal medicine residents at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine.

Our division members are recognized as local, regional, and national leaders in medical education and hold leadership roles in organization such as the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine and the American College of Physicians.

The division is currently in a period of rapid expansion of educational inpatient services programs with a robust hospitalist team now dedicated to inpatient management and care of our acutely ill patients. This allows succinct patient centered rounds led by a hospitalist with an array of learners including residents, medical students, pharmacy colleagues and nursing.

Medical Student Education

Our faculty play leading roles in medical student education, curriculum development, and serve on admission committees for incoming applicants for the NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine. Our physicians are also integral in the three-year innovative accelerated program with involvement in the first-year curriculum and core rotations during the second and third year. NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island hospital and outpatient-affiliated clinics are sites for the primary care clerkship, a four-week rotation with a preceptor in one of our many outpatient ambulatory sites and medicine clerkship, an 8-week rotation working on the hospital wards with our current residents and faculty, and provide mentorship as specialty career advisors to first-, second-, and third-year medical students

Internal Medicine Residency

We proudly oversee the education of 4 chief residents and 82 residents a year, both categorical and preliminary residents in our robust Internal Medicine Residency.

Our faculty play an active role in recruitment, education, and medical informatics, as well as promoting a culture of wellness. We ensure residents gain an understanding of the full spectrum of the field with a focus on expert clinical care and academic growth through training tailored to their individual needs. We also actively help residents plan for their next steps after completing the program, including career placement.

Internal Medicine Research

The division has extensive experience in general medicine research, curriculum development, and innovation in ambulatory care education. Our faculty have led the development of standardized patient programs, the next accreditation system, and resident research meetings for the New York Chapter of the American College of Physicians.
