Department of Radiation Oncology
The Department of Radiation Oncology at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine is committed to providing exceptional medical education, research opportunities, and clinical care of patients with cancer. The depth and breadth of our department’s expertise is illustrated through site-specific specialists in the field of radiation oncology, as well as expert medical physicists.
Our radiation oncologists, who are a part of NYU Langone’s Perlmutter Cancer Center, are internationally known for their expertise in treating patients with CyberKnife stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) or radiosurgery. As one of the first departments in the world to establish an SBRT prostate cancer program, we have more than 15 years of experience in this field and have treated more than 6,000 men with the condition. As the largest prostate radiosurgery program in the country, we take great pride in our reputation as a site that has pioneered the use of this technology.
Our physicians and physicists who specialize in CyberKnife radiosurgery offer training opportunities and conduct research on SBRT. We provide this highly targeted form of treatment both at Perlmutter Cancer Center at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island CyberKnife Center and NYCyberKnife at Perlmutter Cancer Center—Manhattan.
In addition, our site-specific radiation oncologists are versed in the most advanced treatments and protocols to tailor therapy uniquely to each patient we see, and our specialists in the Division of Physics offer their expertise in imaging protocols and quality assurance.
Radiation Oncology Education
Our department trains the next generation of radiation oncology leaders through a variety of teaching, research, and clinical activities.
Undergraduates
We recognize the importance of hands-on medical education and mentorship early in the academic career of aspiring physicians. As such, we offer an annual clinical and research program to future medical students interested in medical, surgical, and radiation oncology.
Medical Students
To develop the clinical judgment necessary to treat people with cancer, students at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine can participate in our radiation oncology clerkship as part of the MD curriculum. The two-week clerkship rotations take place at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island and our clinical training sites.
Residents and Fellows
In addition to educating medical students, we provide training opportunities to residents on the palliative care and hematology–oncology rotations in the Internal Medicine Residency and trainees in the Urology Residency. Trainees in the Oncology and Hematology Fellowship rotate with us to gain experience in all aspects of radiation oncology.
Continuing Medical Education
We offer continuing medical education courses to healthcare professionals who wish to further their education.
We routinely host international training courses on the most recent advances in CyberKnife SBRT and serve as a training site for physicians, physicists, and administrators looking to start or grow an SBRT program. Our annual prostate SBRT clinical course is now in its fifth year and offers unparalleled education to hundreds of physicians, physicists, and nurses throughout the world. In addition, our specialists are routinely sought out to provide CyberKnife radiosurgery expertise both domestically and abroad.
Radiation Oncology Research
Our physicians, physicists, and nurses develop and discover treatments, techniques, and devices that improve the lives of people with a cancer. We investigate, test, and introduce promising new methods of treating patients with a variety of malignancies and functional conditions.
Clinical Trials
Our department offers our patients access to advances in radiation therapy through clinical trials in collaboration with Perlmutter Cancer Center. These trials allow patients to participate in groundbreaking prospective clinical research, both institutional and multi-institutional, including partnerships with Harvard Medical School and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.
CyberKnife Radiosurgery Research
Our researchers are exploring the use of CyberKnife radiosurgery for the treatment of a variety cancers, including prostate, breast, lung, brain, and spinal cord malignancies, and soft tissue sarcoma. As a leader in the field of SBRT, we have published extensively on the topic. In addition, our physicians, physicists, and nurses routinely travel both nationally and internationally to present and lecture on our experience with advanced radiation modalities. We have the largest single institutional prostate SBRT database in the world, which we use to advance research in the treatment of this disease.
Physics Research
Researchers in our Division of Physics are studying evolutionary optimization methods for radiation treatment planning and simulation. Our physicists are routinely involved in complex radiation machine commissioning throughout the world. As a result of this experience, we have developed techniques to reduce the elapsed time from installation to clinical implementation from weeks to days.

We treat more than 800 patients annually with CyberKnife radiosurgery and were the first group in New York metropolitan area to use the technology to treat prostate cancer.
