NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine’s Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship trains culturally competent, thoughtful, humanistic, and capable clinicians, who are well grounded in cardiac pathophysiology, evidence-based management and diagnostic strategies for cardiovascular disease, and cardiovascular research.

Fellows receive state-of-the-art training in all aspects of clinical cardiology, including minimally invasive procedures, with focused, one-on-one attention from full-time faculty members who have experience in all cardiovascular subspecialties, many of whom are leaders in their field. During their training, fellows participate in conferences that address patient safety issues and quality improvement programs.

Participants obtain valuable clinical experience with diverse patient populations at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island, a nationally ranked hospital for cardiology on U.S News and World Report’s “Best Hospitals” 2020–21 Honor Roll. Fellows also rotate on the heart failure–transplant service at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital in Manhattan.

Fellows are afforded opportunities to participate in research projects and attend and present at national and local scientific conferences, including those of the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association. Research opportunities are available across all NYU Langone campuses in Manhattan and Brooklyn and on Long Island.

Program Details

Our three-year fellowship accepts four fellows per year. Cardiovascular fellows gain experience on rotations in clinical consultation, the catheterization laboratory, critical care cardiology, the electrophysiology service, heart failure, invasive and interventional cardiology, and in all aspects of noninvasive cardiovascular imaging, which includes echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, and CT and MRI imaging. Fellows also serve as consultant cardiologists during weekly outpatient cardiology sessions.

Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship program aims include the following:

• provide the skills necessary for trainees to achieve clinical excellence in the diagnosis and management of the wide spectrum of cardiovascular disorders
• ensure that trainees obtain core knowledge in all areas of general cardiovascular medicine, including the broad categories of basic cardiovascular biology, genetics, pharmacotherapeutics, and cardiovascular pathophysiology
• provide all trainees with opportunities for the performance and interpretation of diagnostic techniques and imaging modalities essential to current and future cardiovascular medical practice
• provide the opportunity and resources to engage in productive research leading to publication
• monitor the unique needs of the community we serve and educate fellows regarding those unique needs
• address the distinct capabilities of each of our trainees and attempt to shape, model, and optimize the training experience for each person

In addition to clinical training, fellows take part in formal didactic activities, including a regular lecture series, journal clubs, and case discussions. Significant time is spent working closely with preceptors to formulate a research project early during fellowship training.

The fellowship is overseen by Kevin P. Marzo, MD, program director and chief of cardiology at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island.

First-Year Experience

During the first year, fellows develop clinical skills and experience in cardiovascular disease during inpatient clinic rotations and a weekly outpatient clinic. Fellows rotate for three months on the echocardiography service and for two months each on the coronary care unit, cardiac catheterization lab, and nuclear imaging. Fellows spend one month each on clinical consultations and the electrophysiology service.

Second-Year Experience

During the second year, fellows complete two months of clinical rotations on the catheterization lab, clinical consultations, and nuclear imaging; one month each on the coronary care unit, the echocardiography service, and electrophysiology service; and two months performing research.

Third-Year Experience

During the third year, fellows spend two months rotating on clinical consultations and the coronary care unit. Once fellows have a better idea of their area of interest, they have the opportunity to spend three to four months of dedicated elective time focusing on subspecialty interests, including interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, or imaging.

How to Apply

We accept four fellows per year. To be eligible for the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship, you must complete a three-year Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)–accredited residency program.

We only accept fellowship applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), run by the Association of American Medical Colleges. The deadline for Cardiology Fellowship applications for 2022 is July 1, 2021.

Interviews take place each October and November for positions beginning in July. If you are selected for an interview, you will be contacted via email. We participate in the National Residency Matching Program.
