NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine’s Sleep Medicine Fellowship is an innovative, comprehensive program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Our fellows work closely with nationally recognized faculty and are well prepared to provide excellent patient care and to become leaders in the field.

Program Details

Led by program director Michael D. Weinstein, MD, who is board-certified in sleep medicine and pulmonary medicine, the Sleep Medicine Fellowship is offered by the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine, part of the Department of Medicine. Our one-year fellowship prepares fellows for board certification in sleep medicine.

Sleep Medicine Fellowship program aims include the following:

• provide a multidisciplinary educational experience in the evaluation and management of both common and rare sleep disorders through a core curriculum of lectures, clinical experiences, and research
• combine intensive training and experience in the technological aspects of sleep medicine with broad clinical experience in the full spectrum of clinical sleep medicine, including all age groups, as well as both outpatients and inpatients
• provide formal instruction and hands-on experience in the technological aspects of sleep medicine, including instruction in the indications and limitations of diagnostic tests, as well as proper interpretation

Our faculty lead active clinical research programs with ample opportunities for fellows to be involved.

Clinical Training

Fellows participate in an extremely active outpatient service at NYU Langone Sleep Medicine Associates—Garden City and assume significant responsibility for patient management under the guidance of sleep medicine faculty. Fellows see a range of adult and pediatric patients with a wide spectrum of sleep disorders. Additionally, consultations on inpatients are done at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island.

Fellows are trained in the technological aspects of sleep medicine including performing and interpreting polysomnograms, multiple sleep latency tests, and actigraphy. Our program at NYU Langone Sleep Medicine Associates—Garden City is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and has seven full-time board-certified sleep physicians on staff.

Our fellowship stresses the multidisciplinary nature of sleep medicine and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to the management of patients with sleep disorders. Fellows routinely have educational and clinical interactions with pulmonologists, pediatricians, neurologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, otolaryngologists, dentists, and oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Fellows also participate in the preoperative evaluation and management of patients from our bariatric surgery program.

Fellows have close interaction with subspecialty peers, such as pulmonary and critical care fellows and pediatric pulmonology fellows, as well as with Department of Medicine house staff.

Rotations are divided between adult and pediatric sleep disorders clinic, inpatient sleep consult service, and research. Fellows rotating on the inpatient sleep consult service are responsible for sleep medicine consults.

How to Apply

Applicants should apply one year before the start of their fellowship. All applications will be processed through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

Starting on July 15 of each year, programs begin downloading information. It is in the applicant’s best interest to have all materials uploaded in a timely manner. The deadline for all completed applications is in September.

The following materials are required for application:

• medical school transcript
• three letters of recommendation
• personal statement describing research interest and career goals
• CV
• U.S. Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Steps 1, 2, and 3 scores
• J-1 visa (required for international applicants)
