About the Department of Emergency Medicine Emergency Medicine Diversity & Inclusion

Emergency Medicine Diversity & Inclusion

NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine was founded to educate primary care physicians who reflect diverse communities in order to advance equitable healthcare delivery. Likewise, NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island places a tremendous amount of importance on diversity, inclusion, and healthcare equity. The Department of Emergency Medicine strongly aligns itself with our institutional mission statement.

Our department is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment for our employees, team members, and patients. We are constantly reassessing our progress in order to ensure that we are actively meeting our goals, and evolving and changing in response to our patients’ needs. Our work in this field is a dynamic conversation between leadership, faculty, and trainees.

Diversity Leadership in Emergency Medicine

Suchismita (Suchi) Datta, MD, is the graduate medical education diversity leader for NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine. As a core faculty member in emergency medicine, Dr. Datta also serves as a resource for our department in all matters related to diversity, inclusion, and healthcare equity. Dr. Datta’s expertise elevates our department to the forefront of providing an inclusive environment that ensures equity for both patients and staff.

Diversity Initiatives

We seek a cohort of trainees and staff who represents the diversity of our community. During the recruiting process, we provide applicants from underrepresented groups with mentorship and a safe space to ask questions that they find sensitive or difficult to ask.

Implicit bias and antiracism training, Healthcare Equity Grand Rounds, and targeted journal clubs help our department facilitate important discussions, identify areas for improvement, and guide evolving practices to ensure that our training programs serve the needs of all learners.

Our faculty support and promote diversity and inclusion by being involved with healthcare equity research and advancement such as preventative health screening in the emergency department and direct referral to primary care for patients without access to primary care.

Emergency Medicine Diversity Ambassador

The Department of Emergency Medicine has a dedicated ambassador to the NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine Diversity Committee. The diversity ambassador helps address diversity and inclusion issues in the department and is the departmental liaison to the institutional diversity committee. Faculty members with a passion for leadership in diversity, equity, and inclusion can be considered for this position.
