Division of Gastroenterology

We offer extensive services and training in gastroenterology, endoscopy, and hepatology.

The Division of Gastroenterology at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine has expertise in all aspects of gastroenterology, endoscopy, hepatology, and nutrition training, research, and clinical services. Led by Jessica Widmer, DO, our faculty members, who have broad clinical and research experience, are also dedicated to providing training that produces outstanding clinician–scientists, academicians, and clinicians.

Gastroenterology Education

Trainees in our division, which is part of the Department of Medicine, gain a comprehensive foundation of clinical knowledge and experience, including the latest evidence-based approaches to advanced therapeutics. Under the guidance of our expert faculty, trainees also have the opportunity to conduct clinical and translational research in gastrointestinal and liver diseases.

Gastroenterology Fellowship

We offer a three-year Gastroenterology Fellowship that includes rotations in advanced hepatology and liver transplant, and general gastroenterology. Clinical training takes place at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island, NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital, and NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. Fellows who have graduated from our program have successfully established themselves in academic or clinical careers throughout the United States.

Medical Student Education

Our division organizes and directs the Gastrointestinal System preclerkship course for first-year students at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine. We also provide an opportunity for medical students to choose a clinical elective in gastroenterology and to participate in research in gastrointestinal and liver diseases and in nutrition under the mentorship of our faculty.

Gastroenterology Research

Our investigators are currently involved in clinical and translational research in areas such as pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), irritable bowel syndrome, motility disorders of the gastrointestinal system, biliary and pancreatic endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound and general endoscopy, etiology of chronic abdominal pain, and technologies in therapeutic endoscopy.

Our research goal is to improve the treatment of gastrointestinal and liver diseases by employing the most advanced therapies and procedures in the care of our patients while studying how application of these therapies and procedures improves safety and effectiveness. We also participate in clinical trials at NYU Langone Long Island Clinical Research Associates, part of NYU Langone Nassau Gastroenterology Associates, to advance our knowledge of gastrointestinal diseases and their treatment.
