Division of Gastroenterology Gastroenterology Fellowship

Gastroenterology Fellowship

The Department of Medicine at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine offers a three-year Gastroenterology Fellowship that provides extensive experience in all aspects of gastroenterology, endoscopy, hepatology, and nutrition. Our fellows have the opportunity to become proficient in these areas through our school’s centers of excellence and rotations in hepatology, liver transplant, and general gastroenterology. Fellows who graduated from our program have successfully established themselves in academic or clinical careers.

The fellowship is led by Michael Kantrowitz, DO, program director Division of Gastroenterology.

The fellowship is offered through the Division of Gastroenterology, part of the Department of Medicine.

Program Details

Fellows in our program receive training in standard gastrointestinal (GI) procedures during the first year, followed in the second and third years by training in the newer modalities of investigational and therapeutic procedures such as endoscopic ultrasound, endoscopic stent placement, colonic and rectal motility studies, and 24-hour monitoring of esophageal pH and motility.

Throughout training, fellows follow patients in the weekly outpatient GI and liver clinics. Fellows also gain knowledge in nutrition and total parenteral nutrition by participating in the inpatient nutrition service. Fellows in their second and third years have more research elective opportunities and the opportunity to perfect their endoscopic skills.

Gastroenterology Fellowship program aims include the following:

  • provide medical knowledge through patient encounters and didactic sessions, which allow the graduating fellow to pass the GI boards and provide comprehensive care to inpatients and outpatients
  • provide a support system that allows for personal and professional growth, minimizes burnout, and promotes resilience
  • provide the tools to assure continuity of care for patients

Clinical Training

Clinical training takes place mainly at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island. Fellows also rotate through NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital for liver transplant. Working side by side with our multidisciplinary team of providers, fellows receive extensive training in general GI diseases, enteral and parenteral nutrition, GI motility and functional disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, liver and biliary diseases, and pancreatic diseases. Fellows are also exposed to endoscopy services including endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic ultrasound, advanced therapeutic biliary and pancreatic endoscopy, and endoscopic treatment of Barrett’s esophagus.

Fellows also have the option to select from electives in gastroenterology, colorectal surgery, radiology, and pathology.

Research Opportunities

Under the guidance of our expert faculty, fellows have the opportunity to conduct clinical research in pancreatitis; pancreatic cancer; gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD; irritable bowel syndrome; motility disorders of the GI system; biliary and pancreatic endoscopy; endoscopic ultrasound and general endoscopy; etiology of chronic abdominal pain; and technologies in therapeutic endoscopy.

Our fellows have presented abstracts and posters at the annual meetings of the American Gastroenterological Association, the American College of Gastroenterology, and at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine’s House Staff Research Day.
