Physician Wellness & Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
The Department of Medicine, as part of organizational emphasis on physician wellness, prioritizes resident and physician wellness. We encourage the use of wellness days allowing residents to attend their own appointments. We sponsor monthly events to encourage residents to decompress outside the hospital setting. Recent events include a private guided tour of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, private tour of the New York City Highline, Paint and Sip and wine tour of eastern Long Island. We also sponsor an annual wellness week promoting discussion of wellness with quick “breaks” for coffee, and 10 minute chair massages.
Our Internal Medicine Residency is committed to recruiting, training and mentoring a diverse group of physicians. Our patients come from a variety of backgrounds and we try to embrace and celebrate that same diversity that exists amongst our residents and faculty. We aim to provide an environment where all people regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, sex, gender identity or sexual orientation feel welcome and valued for who they are. Our DEI committee led by Faculty Advisor Nicholas Berbari, MD and IM Ambassador Odette A. Thomas, MD with resident representatives from all PGY years fosters this learning through lecture series and panel discussions.
