The Division of Palliative Medicine and Bioethics, within the Department of Medicine at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine, offers outstanding educational and research opportunities and a highly integrated interdisciplinary team–based approach to patient care.

Jeffrey T. Berger, MD, division chief, leads a group of expert faculty who regularly contribute to the palliative medicine and bioethics literature in peer-reviewed journals, present their scholarship at national and regional meetings, and have earned national recognition for their accomplishments.

Palliative Medicine and Bioethics Education

We are committed to training the next generation of specialists in palliative medicine and bioethics to deliver high-quality, patient-centered, interdisciplinary team–based care within complex health systems.

Medical Student Education

At NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine, Dr. Berger and Dana Ribeiro Miller, MDiv, LCSW, ACHP-SW, co-direct the three-year longitudinal course Social Sciences, Humanities, Ethics, and Professionalism. In addition, our division faculty support simulation exercises in the Practice of Medicine course, and problem-based learning activities in the broader medical curriculum.

We also offer a palliative care clinical elective to students in each of the three years of the MD curriculum. A senior elective in bioethics and social sciences is available to medical students during their third year.

Residency Training

Resident physicians who take part in NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine’s Internal Medicine Residency curriculum can choose to complete a palliative medicine elective and receive didactic education in palliative care and bioethics with faculty from our division.

Fellowship Training

We offer a one-year Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship that addresses the complex moral and ethical challenges of palliative care and prepares physicians to become independent clinicians in this rewarding field.

Palliative care electives are also available to fellows in NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine’s Oncology and Hematology Fellowship, Geriatric Medicine Fellowship, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship, and Nephrology Fellowship.

Palliative and Supportive Clinical Services

Our expert team of palliative care physicians, advance practice nurses, nurses, and social workers offer palliative and supportive care for both inpatients and outpatients with cancer, kidney failure, congestive heart failure, and chronic lung diseases. Our services are available at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island and NYU Langone Palliative Medicine Associates—Mineola and through NYU Langone Home Health Care.
