Department of Orthopedic Surgery Education

We offer exceptional orthopedic training to residents and medical students.

The Department of Orthopedic Surgery at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine includes many subspecialty divisions focused on the full breadth of orthopedic surgery. This provides trainees and medical students the opportunity to care for a diverse patient population and experience a large volume of common and complex cases.

Orthopedic Surgery Residency

Our five-year Orthopedic Surgery Residency program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The residency offers a robust curriculum and the skills, knowledge, and experience to prepare residents to successfully complete the certifying exams of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) and to enter the practice as well-trained, highly competent orthopedic surgeons. Our program’s comprehensive didactic program includes weekly lectures on all of the orthopedic subspecialties, bimonthly journal clubs, and access to surgical skills labs.

Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency

We also offer a three-year Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency with a credential in Reconstructive Rearfoot and Ankle Surgery (PMSR/RRA) accredited by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME). Residents train alongside our renowned faculty and develop expertise in the prevention, diagnosis, and management of patients with foot and ankle conditions. The residency prepares trainees for successful careers in both academic and clinical podiatry surgery.

Medical Student Education

To develop the clinical judgment necessary to diagnose diseases and treat patients, medical students participate in the department’s core orthopedic surgery clerkship as part of phase two of the MD curriculum. The four-week orthopedic surgery clerkship rotations take place at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island and our clinical training sites.

We also offer an opportunity for interested visiting medical students to participate in an orthopedic surgery away rotation.
