Our mental healthcare experts provide inpatient and outpatient services to patients of all ages.

The Department of Psychiatry at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine provides inpatient and outpatient clinical services to our patients at several locations on Long Island.

Behavioral Health Services at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island

Psychiatrists, psychologists, and nurse practitioners at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island and NYU Langone Behavioral Health Associates—Mineola offer a full spectrum of integrated behavioral inpatient and outpatient health services to patients of all ages. Our many specialties include consultation–liaison psychiatry, pediatric psychiatry, diabetes mental health, perinatal and women’s mental health, psycho-oncology, children and adult neuropsychiatric testing, dementia and delirium diagnosis and management, geriatric psychiatry, transplant mental health, inflammatory bowel disease mental health, and bariatric surgery mental health.

General Hospital Mental Health Services at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island

Recognizing a high prevalence of mental health issues in the general population as well as medically ill patients, we offer systematic proactive screening of patients admitted to NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island and do our best to ensure adequate post-discharge aftercare. These include regular integrated rounds with the primary care team, including medical, surgical, pediatric, maternity, oncology, palliative, and other clinical services.

Our highly skilled group of licensed clinical social workers are actively engaged in the process of screening for tobacco, alcohol, and other psychoactive substances, and provide necessary counseling and substance treatment referral.

Outpatient Mental Health Services

Our outpatient psychiatry service comprises psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, psychologists, and clinical social workers. Our clinicians provide medication management for mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, obsessive–compulsive disorder, psychosis, neurocognitive disorders, and more. We also offer a variety of psychotherapy modalities from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR).

As part of a collaborative care initiative, we provide psychiatric services to patients throughout many specialized clinical departments within the NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island system. There is a bidirectional flow regarding chronic conditions and mental health. We aim to provide collaborative care and use evidence-based care models to improve healthcare outcomes and quality of life for our patients. Unaddressed mental health needs are well known to lead to treatment noncompliance and suboptimal outcomes.

Endocrinology and Mental Health Service Clinic

Knowing that patients with medical comorbidities including diabetes and obesity have been found to have disproportionately higher rates of mental health conditions, including depression, we developed a collaborative NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island endocrinology and mental health service clinic.

Maternity Mental Health Outpatient Service

Our maternity mental health outpatient service offers clinical expertise in treating mood and anxiety disorders, as well as other psychiatric disorders in context of hormonal imbalance. We provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment for people with psychiatric disorders who are pregnant and for those who wish to conceive.

We provide information from evidence-based studies regarding the risks of psychotropic drug use versus risks of an untreated psychiatric disorder during pregnancy. We offer pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatments, including psychotherapy, as well as referrals to support services specifically designed for postpartum patients. Clinical consultation is also offered to people who may benefit from the use of medication and who wish to breastfeed, taking into account all available information regarding the safety of this practice during lactation. We work closely with gynecologists, obstetricians, midwives, and social workers in the community to help create the best plan for managing symptoms and fostering a healthy pregnancy and postpartum period.

Geriatric Care

Recognizing the high prevalence in older populations of anxiety, depression, and neurocognitive disorders, with and without behavioral disturbances, we collaborate with the geriatric service on optimizing care for this population. We place special focus on preserving and enhancing cognitive reserve capacity and functional status. In addition, we provide mental health support and guidance to the caregivers and families of these patients.

Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Clinic

Our psychiatric clinic at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island Pediatric Center is a model of mixed outpatient psychiatric consultation and internal psychiatric referral. Our clinicians cover a range of issues in child and adolescent psychiatry such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other anxiety, mood, and tic disorders. We provide regular outpatient psychiatric care with psychotherapy and medical management for ongoing issues. When symptoms have subsided or are meaningfully improved, we transfer care to a pediatrician.
