Department of Surgery

We deliver excellence in surgical clinical care, education, and research.

With more than 125 years of history serving our communities on Long Island, the Department of Surgery at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine and NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island, formerly Winthrop Hospital, is a leader in clinical services, education, and research that furthers our mission of providing expert surgical care.

Faculty in our subspecialty divisions are leaders in their fields—many have unparalleled accomplishments—and our team has the expertise to provide the best care in any setting, from a scheduled outpatient procedure to trauma and acute care surgery.

Our commitment to diversity, innovation, compassion, and safety is evident in everything we do, and we are proud to foster an inclusive and dynamic culture for our physicians, trainees, and patients.

Surgery Education

From medical school to fellowship, our trainees build a foundation of surgical knowledge and experience in an academic and collegial community setting. At NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island, we see a diverse patient population that is reflected in the composition of our faculty, residents, and fellows. As trainees progress through our programs and gain expertise in procedural skills and operative techniques, we provide personalized guidance to help them meet their professional goals.

Our General Surgery Residency provides physicians with high-quality, broad-based didactic and clinical training. We offer five-year categorical positions and two-year preliminary positions, giving residents the option to individualize their career goals.

Graduates of our program are frequently accepted to some of the most competitive fellowship programs in the country, including those offered by NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine.

Physicians who pursue subspecialty training in our Advanced Gastrointestinal, Bariatric, and Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship learn the latest techniques in laparoscopic and robotic surgery, with an emphasis on metabolic and bariatric procedures. Our fellows become skilled surgeons who are prepared to launch successful careers in this competitive field.

Surgery Research

Physician–investigators in the department lead pioneering studies designed to enhance our ability to care for patients. Our research encompasses basic, clinical, and translational projects, with focus areas ranging from predicting and preventing adverse outcomes in the emergency department to determining best practices for surgical procedures in patients with COVID-19.

Our International Observership Program in Surgery brings in scholars from all over the globe to join our team of clinical and academic surgical researchers, with a particular focus on trauma, acute care surgery, and surgical critical care.

Surgery Clinical Services

Our skilled team provides outstanding care to communities across Long Island. Our areas of expertise include surgical oncology, otolaryngology—head and neck surgery, minimally invasive surgery, plastic surgery, pediatric surgery, vascular surgery, trauma and acute care surgery, and wound healing and regenerative medicine.
