Podiatric Medicine & Surgery Residency
The Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency with Reconstructive Rearfoot and Ankle Credential (PMSR/RRA) offered by NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine’s Department of Orthopedic Surgery is accredited by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME). Our residency program sponsors three residents for three years (36 months) of training and prepares residents for successful careers in both academic and clinical podiatric surgery.
We take pride in the surgical skills our residents develop, providing a magnitude of cases well beyond the requirements outlined by the CPME. Top doctors teach residents how to provide expert care in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the foot and ankle in a state-of the-art setting at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island, where residents learn the newest medical and surgical techniques for correction of foot and ankle abnormalities. It is our goal to meet all the podiatric needs of our patients so they can return to and maintain both physical and mental wellness.
The residency program is overseen by Raymond Ferguson, DPM, chief of the Division of Podiatry and program director. April M. Bailey-Maletta, DPM, is the residency assistant program director, and Jaclyn Freydberg is the residency program coordinator.

Application Procedure and How to Apply for Our Residency
The American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine (AACPM) is a national educational organization that represents the 9 accredited U.S. colleges of podiatric medicine as well as more than 200 hospitals and organizations that conduct graduate training in podiatric medicine. Our residency participates in several national service programs administered by the AACPM including the following.
Central Application Service for Podiatric Residencies
The Central Application Service for Podiatric Residencies (CASPR) is the application and matching service for fourth-year students applying for residency positions in teaching hospitals and surgery centers.
Centralized Residency Interview Program
The Centralized Residency Interview Program (CRIP) coordinates the interview process for podiatric residency. Residency program faculty and candidates meet in Frisco, Texas, to interview during a six-day period each January. Our program only accepts applications through CASPR/CRIP and participates during the East Coast Section Interviews.
Apply for Our Residency
If you are interested in applying for our Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency, you may do so directly through the Central Application Service for Podiatric Residencies/Centralized Residency Interview Program (CASPR/CRIP). Please be sure to include the following items with your application:
- your podiatry school transcript
- a dean’s letter
- at least three letters of recommendation
- an updated CV
- a personal statement
Applicants must pass Parts I and II of the National Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners (NBPME) prior to applying. You will be required to indicate whether you passed or failed on your application.
Interviews are held annually every January in Frisco, Texas. All applications are taken into consideration, and we welcome students from all podiatry schools.
