Office of Students & Diversity
NYU Long Island School of Medicine’s Office of Students and Diversity supports individual and professional development initiatives that create an inclusive community for medical students. Our mission is to foster excellence, compassion, and integrity with proactive advising and career counseling for all students.
Our office develops and implements programs, policies, and services that promote self-awareness, resilience, and wellbeing. We do this in a learning environment where students witness, experience, and expect a sense of respect, collegiality, kindness, and cooperation.
There are many opportunities to participate in clubs and activities. As a medical student, you may find yourself drawn to particular areas of interest and may wish to work with other students who share those interests.
The Office of Students and Diversity welcomes students to start clubs and organize activities in areas of interest and offers support in the creation of specialty interest groups. Representatives from our office are available to assist with creating a plan for your club, as well as with setting goals.
Accessible Housing
The Office of Students and Diversity accepts and processes requests for accessible housing from students with disabilities who are otherwise eligible to reside in NYU Langone Long Island School of Medicine housing. Students seeking accessible housing should reach out to the Office of Students and Diversity via email at medli.students@nyulangone.org or by phone at 516-240-7200 (select option 2). The Office of Students and Diversity is located at 101 Mineola Boulevard, suite 2-084, in Mineola, New York.
Faculty Diversity Initiatives
We seek to attract and retain talent that reflects the rich diversity of our communities and the patients we serve by actively recruiting individuals from groups that are underrepresented in medicine into faculty, staff, and leadership positions.
Our staff participates in regular training sessions, as recommended by the Association of American Medical Colleges, to mitigate unconscious bias and to better understand and appreciate the diverse backgrounds of our students and their colleagues.
Diversity and Inclusion Committee
We have established a Diversity and Inclusion Committee to implement the following strategies:
- attend national and regional meetings that address minority health issues
- post open faculty and staff positions in publications with minority audiences
- fund a visiting elective program for students who are underrepresented in medicine
- establish collaborative relationships with professional organizations that share these diversity mandates
Departmental Diversity Ambassadors
All departments and institutes have a departmental diversity ambassador, who has been appointed to champion diversity and inclusion efforts. Diversity ambassadors meet regularly with members of their department to gather suggestions for encouraging an inclusive environment. They then collaborate with the director of diversity and inclusion to develop a school-wide strategy that reflects the suggestions of the broader community.
