Division of Gynecologic Oncology
The Division of Gynecologic Oncology at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine aims to provide our community with cancer care of the highest quality. Our faculty are skilled and compassionate providers, as well as dedicated educators and pioneering researchers. We provide care as part of Perlmutter Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute–designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Led by division chief Edward A. Jiménez, DO, our team has expertise in a wide range of procedures, from minimally invasive surgery for diagnosis and staging to more complex procedures, such as pelvic exenterations and radical cytoreduction for patients with advanced cancers. Our approach is informed by evidence-based oncology, and we actively participate in clinical research to explore new ways to prevent and treat gynecologic cancers.
Gynecologic Oncology Education
As part of the Perlmutter Cancer Center, our educational programs offer exceptional opportunities for trainees to learn innovative surgical techniques in order to optimize management of cancer and enhance patient outcomes.
Our faculty also provide training in areas such as complex anatomy, cancer biology, cancer genetics, cancer prevention, principles of chemotherapy, targeted therapies, palliative care, and patient advocacy, giving our trainees a well-rounded foundation of skills that positions them to launch successful careers.
Training for Medical Students
Medical students who rotate through our division learn the basics of gynecologic cancer biology, principles of oncologic surgery, cancer staging and treatment, and personalized chemotherapy. NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine offers an innovative three-year MD curriculum that integrates basic, translational, and clinical research. We welcome medical students to participate in clinical research led by our division.
Training for Residents
Obstetrics and gynecology residents rotate through our division in their second and fourth years, becoming familiar with the clinical and biological aspects of gynecologic oncology and developing their surgical techniques during procedures for both gynecologic malignancies and complex benign gynecologic pathology. Residents also provide comprehensive outpatient cancer care. Our residents often participate in clinical research and quality improvement projects, and many have presented their results at local, national, and international scientific meetings.
We offer more intensive clinical and research training for residents who plan to pursue careers as gynecologic oncologists. Many of our residents have gone on to match at various gynecologic oncology fellowship programs around the country.
Training for Fellows
Although we do not currently have a dedicated fellowship program, we are a training site for gynecologic oncology fellows from NYU Grossman School of Medicine who rotate through NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island in order to participate in advanced and complex cancer procedures that enhance their learning.
We also participate in training surgeons in the Minimally Invasive and Robotic Gynecologic Surgery Fellowship offered by NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine.
Gynecologic Oncology Research
Our dedication to clinical and translational science is demonstrated by our broad and integrated approaches to cancer treatment and prevention.
Clinical Trials
We are part of Perlmutter Cancer Center’s extensive and growing clinical trials program. Our studies aim to enhance outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed cancer by combining new approaches with the standard of care. We also investigate precision oncology drugs to treat patients with recurrent cancers. Our clinical trials offer the opportunity for a more successful treatment than would otherwise be available through routine care.
We also conduct a range of prevention trials, aspiring to reduce the number of people who develop gynecologic cancer by expanding genetic testing and cancer prevention efforts across Long Island, including patients of all socioeconomic status.
Gynecologic Oncology Clinical Services
Our team provides treatment for patients who have recently received a gynecologic cancer diagnosis at our Long Island Perlmutter Cancer Center locations. We treat people with a range of cancers, including cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, vaginal cancer, and vulvar cancer.
Our surgeons are experts in gynecologic cancer surgery, including radical cytoreduction, minimally invasive and robotic surgery, cancer prevention surgery, and complex pelvic surgery. We use the most advanced surgical approaches available, offering patients comprehensive care and the highest quality-of-life outcomes. We also offer a range of integrated services before and after treatment that includes genetic testing, advanced imaging techniques, pelvic rehabilitation, and occupational and physical therapy.
Most chemotherapy treatments are available in an outpatient setting without the need for overnight hospital stays. This applies to standard treatments as well as investigational agents prescribed as part of our clinical trials program. We also offer hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy in select cases.
