The General Surgery Residency at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine provides an unsurpassed educational experience. We train our residents to become skilled surgeons who are committed to delivering compassionate and safe patient care.

Led by Loretto A. Glynn, MD, director, and Jun L. Levine, MD, associate director, our approach to residency education is fueled by our commitment to diversity, innovation, and professional development. Through a rigorous, multifaceted curriculum at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island, we strive to exceed expectations by fostering an academic culture that is as diverse and inclusive as our community—a place where people from different backgrounds and disciplines can collaborate with one another and achieve educational and career milestones.

Accepted residents are assigned a faculty mentor, and this serves as the initial framework for their professional development. By the end of their training, our residents easily complete the extensive requirements for certification by the American Board of Surgery.

For those who seek subspecialty training, the Department of Surgery sponsors an accredited Advanced Gastrointestinal, Bariatric, and Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship. Additionally, we collaborate with Stony Brook University in an accredited fellowship in vascular surgery, and additional fellowship programs are being planned. Since the establishment of our program, our graduating residents had a 100 percent fellowship match rate, and all of our chief residents matched in their desired specialties. All of our graduating residents with specialty matches matched in their desired specialties, which include cardiac surgery, plastic surgery, thoracic surgery, colorectal surgery, transplant surgery, hand/microsurgery, and vascular surgery.

In addition to the breadth of clinical material for hands-on experience, clinical and basic science research is available for those who wish to pursue these areas. We now offer a research track with time allocated for dedicated study and research. However, participation in laboratory research is not a requirement in our program.

Resident Wellness

Our residents are a diverse group of individuals who support each other both in and out of the operating room.

Outside of work, we promote the health and wellbeing of our residents. This includes exploring local restaurants, playing soccer, or taking a break from the hospital and exploring the beautiful Long Island scenery or heading into the bustling scene that is New York City.

How to Apply

Our residency offers categorical and preliminary positions. The categorical position is for five years, and the preliminary position is for one year that can be extended up to two years. Applicants are considered eligible if they meet the following qualifications:

• graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME)
• graduates of colleges of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA)
• graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada who meet one of the following qualifications:
  • received a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG)
  • have a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. licensing jurisdiction
• graduates of medical schools outside the United States who have completed a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school
• U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or persons with a visa with authorization to train in the United States during the term of the appointment

We participate in the National Resident Matching Program, also known as The Match. We only accept residency program applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), run by the Association of American Medical Colleges.

The following documentation, at a minimum, is required:

• certification of graduation from any accredited medical school or ECFMG-certified medical institution, documentation of which must originate from the academic institution granting the degree and have the proper seal of the institution
• at least two letters of recommendation from surgeons
• documentation accounting for any lapses between the end of medical school and the present
• proper documentation of employment and work performed since graduation from medical school
• United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX) board scores demonstrating successful completion

The deadline for General Surgery Residency applications is October 15 each year. Interviews for postgraduate year 1 (PGY-1) positions take place each November through January for positions beginning in July.
