Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship
The Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine is designed to train the next generation of leaders in emergency ultrasound, with a focus on clinical excellence, medical education, research, and program administration. Our fellowship prepares physicians for both academic and community-based careers by providing comprehensive, hands-on experience in the use of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in emergency medicine.
Fellowship Overview
Fellows engage in a rigorous curriculum that includes the following:
- formal didactic instruction
- supervised bedside scanning
- simulation-based learning
- image review and quality assurance
- participation in ultrasound-focused research projects
- teaching and curriculum development
Fellows emerge with advanced skills in ultrasound education, program management, and clinical application, supported by mentorship from experienced faculty in Emergency Ultrasound.
Eligible applicants include graduates of ACGME-accredited Emergency Medicine residency programs.
Graduates who are board-certified or board-eligible by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) will qualify to sit for the ABEM Focused Practice Designation (FPD).
Clinical Training
Fellows train mainly at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island with some shifts at NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk. Training sites offer high-acuity environments, diverse patient populations, and the latest technology, including the following resources:
- state-of-the art ultrasound equipment and digital archiving systems
- access to growing simulation facilities
- access to training opportunities with standardized patients
Fellows average 20 clinical hours per week, maintaining sharp clinical skills while reinforcing their ability to integrate ultrasound into daily emergency care.
Education and Teaching
Fellows play an active role in teaching ultrasound at multiple levels, with opportunities that include:
- participating in weekly ultrasound conferences with QA review, journal club, hands-on practice, and didactics
- leading resident and student ultrasound education, including simulation-based teaching and curriculum delivery
- assisting in ultrasound certification for attending physicians
Research
Fellows are expected to complete a scholarly project, with support from both the emergency ultrasound and clinical research divisions. Projects typically include the following:
- protocol design and IRB approval
- data acquisition and analysis
- abstract submission and conference presentation
- manuscript authorship and submission for peer-reviewed publication
Fellows stay current on emerging evidence through regular journal club meetings and attendance at national and potentially international ultrasound conferences.
Leadership and Administration
Fellows take part in the Department of Emergency Medicine’s Emergency Ultrasound operations, contributing to the following:
- monthly business meetings
- ultrasound equipment oversight and image archiving
- quality assurance initiatives
- ultrasound program development and hospital-wide POCUS integration
There are also opportunities to engage in health policy, advocacy, and financial planning for ultrasound program infrastructure.
